たたる【祟る】

1 〔怨霊などが災いをもたらす〕 haunt; (苦しめる) torment; bring a curse upon…; inflict a calamity [punishment] on…; curse sb.

●悪霊に祟られた家 a house haunted by an evil spirit

・祟られた男 a haunted man; an accursed man

・怨霊に祟られる be haunted by a vengeful spirit.

●あの一家には何かが祟っている. There is a curse on that family.

・そんなことをすると祟られるぞ. A thing like that'll bring misfortune down upon you.

・それはきっと彼女の霊が祟ってるのだ. That is probably happening because her spirit is putting some curse on you.

2 〔行為などが災いをもたらす〕 bring evil in one's train; take its toll on sb; curse; 〔天災などがふりかかる〕 visit; torment; inflict (a punishment for…).

●ひどい風邪に祟られる be tormented by a terrible cold
